Torch

What would you do if given the torch?
Lead, follow or make your own course?
Would you carry it proudly or find someone who could?
Or make even more torches of fire and wood?
Whatever you do, keep hold of the light:
Do not let it go in the darkness of night.

Candle

In familiar comfort was I alone
Like a candle’s light in darkness shown.
With trembling flame and cotton wick,
The blackness does the light constrict.
It dances softly on the floor
To contrast shadows on the drawer.
Darkness seeks to steal the light
As does age with time blur sight.
The candle’s wax changes form
From stick to base into puddle warm.
Not unlike our fragile figures,
The wax grows stiff with absent flicker.

The Leader

Six thousand eyes upon you there,
Standing on the platform square.
Fractured light by marble columns
Moves solemnly across the stairs.
It warms the mantle above the commons,
Below whose vaults you do prepare.
The noise makes room for silence,
Which quickly do you seize.
The crowds are finally quiet;
The time has come to lead:

“Let those of you who know me
Validate my deeds.
To those whose eyes I stand before:
Open them and see.”

Into the day are your words carried
To captive ears by silver tongue.
The verdant palm branch has been readied,
And the Eagle’s banner hung.

Prompted Poem, If I Had…

If I had the power of creation,
Strength borrowed from
godly err,
I’d bring the light into the darkness
And through its lens compare
Either giving mankind to harshness
Or leaving my choices bare.

In response to a prompt by Cubby

Golden Lion

The golden lion’s poise is regal to behold;
With tremendous body swaying, decisive and bold.
The rays of the sun respect him and shine upon him well,
As if to pay him tribute for reflections of themselves.
His place is known by all who’ve seen his light,
Either through mutual agreement or torn by vicious bite.

The sun will outlast the lion regardless,
It cannot preserve his gold.
It is time alone that will tame this lion
By making him grow old.
